Understanding GHS Chemical Labeling

If your business manufactures, handles, transports, or stores chemicals, you have likely encountered the term GHS labeling. But many companies still ask the question: what is a GHS label, and why is it required?

A GHS label is a standardized hazard communication label used to identify chemical hazards and provide critical safety information. These labels are part of the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals, commonly referred to as GHS.

The GHS system was developed by the United Nations to create a consistent international standard for communicating chemical hazards. Before GHS was adopted, different countries used different labeling systems, which often created confusion and increased safety risks.

By standardizing how hazards are identified and communicated, GHS compliant labels help ensure that workers, transportation personnel, and emergency responders can quickly understand the risks associated with chemical substances.

Why GHS Labels Exist

Chemical safety is a serious concern across many industries. Improper handling of hazardous materials can result in injuries, environmental damage, and costly regulatory penalties. What Information Must Appear on a GHS Label

To meet GHS chemical labeling requirements, each label must contain specific elements designed to communicate hazard information clearly.

A properly formatted GHS compliant label typically includes the following components.

  • Product Identifier


    The product identifier identifies the chemical substance or mixture contained in the container. This information allows workers and regulators to quickly determine what material they are dealing with.

  • Signal Word

    There are two signal words used in GHS labeling:

    Danger – indicates more severe hazards

    Warning – indicates less severe hazards

    These signal words help quickly communicate the level of risk associated with the product.

  • Hazard Pictograms

    One of the most recognizable features of GHS labels is the use of hazard pictograms. These symbols appear inside a red diamond-shaped border and visually represent the type of hazard present. Common GHS pictograms include:

    • Flame (flammable substances)
    • Skull and crossbones (acute toxicity)
    • Corrosion (skin or metal corrosion)
    • Exploding bomb (explosive materials)
    • Health hazard (carcinogens or respiratory hazards)
    • Gas cylinder (compressed gases)
    • Flame over circle (oxidizers)
    • Exclamation mark (irritants or less severe toxicity)
    • Environmental hazard (aquatic toxicity)

    These pictograms allow people to quickly recognize hazards even if they do not read the full label text.

  • Hazard Statements

    Hazard statements describe the nature of the hazard associated with the chemical. Examples include:

    • Highly flammable liquid and vapor
    • Causes severe skin burns and eye damage
    • Toxic if swallowed
    • May cause respiratory irritation

    Hazard statements must follow standardized wording to ensure consistency across industries.

  • Precautionary Statements

    Precautionary statements provide guidance on how to safely handle, store, and dispose of the chemical. Examples may include:

    • Wear protective gloves and eye protection
    • Store in a well-ventilated area
    • Avoid breathing vapors
    • Dispose of contents according to regulations

    These instructions help workers reduce the risk of exposure.

  • Supplier Identification

    The label must also include the name, address, and contact information of the manufacturer, importer, or distributor responsible for the product.

    This information allows users or regulators to contact the supplier if additional safety information is required.
